Networks rely on over-provisioning and manual intervention to ensure Quality of Service (QoS). While this strategy is acceptable for current network complexities, QoS cannot be assured in this manner in future networks or in wireless systems. It is becoming increasingly clear that measurement based network reconfiguration will form a core component in the management of future networks. While offering substantial performance gains, automatic reconfiguration of networks creates significant new research challenges in network engineering.
