Dr. Qiang Ni

Between May 2004 and October 2005, I was a Senior Researcher at the Hamilton Institute, National University of Ireland, Maynooth (NUIM), Co. Kildare, Ireland. Prior to that, I was an expert researcher at the Planete Group, INRIA Sophia Antipolis, France for three years (2001-2004). My research work in France can be found at INRIA (Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en Automatique, France).

Between 2000 and 2001, I was a postdoctoral research fellow in the Multimedia and Wireless Communication Laboratory at the Department of Electronics & Information Engineering, Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST), Wuhan City, P.R. China. During the year of 2000, I visited the Wireless and Networking Group of Microsoft Research, Asia Lab and conducted research at the Microsoft Research Asia Lab.

I received my Ph.D. degree in engineering from the HUST, China. During my PhD study, I took a training program in TCP/IP networking engineering at the Cisco Networking Academy and received a Best Student Award from the Cisco Networking Academy.

My current research interests are pervasive wireless and mobile communications networks including Wireless LANs (802.11 WiFi), Wireless MANs (802.16 WiMax), and 3G/4G mobile cellular networks.

I am a member of IEEE and a voting member of IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN standard working group.

Research Areas:

• Wireless communication network protocol design, QoS provisioning, and performance analysis;
• Integrated IEEE 802.11/802.16 wireless mesh networks;
• Cross-layer (joint PHY/MAC) optimizations for mobile and wireless communication networks;
• Multi-radio/mutil-hop channel adaptation;
• Space-time coding (MIMO/OFDM) and link-adaptation for next-generation broadband wireless networks;
• Wireless standardization activities (My contributions at IEEE 802.11n/802.11e, IEEE 802.16, IEEEE 802.20 Working Groups);
• Adaptive multimedia communication protocols;
• Network security and reliable communications.

Research Projects and Funding:

• Investigator and Senior Research Fellow in the project "Wireless Networks & Communications: QoS Provisioning and Resource Management" funded by the Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) -- NCNRC (National Communications Network Research Center). It is a joint project with Intel Corporation and several Irish universities (EUR 5.6M, Grant No. 03/IN3/I396).
• Investigator Cluster, "Adaptive Air-Interface and Link-Layer Communication Protocols for MIMO-OFDM 4G Mobile & Wireless Communication System" funded by the National Science Foundation of China (7MB RMB in total, 1M to HUST, Grant No. 60496310).
• Investigator involved in the French National Telecommunication and Network Project VTHD++ (Next-Generation Very High-Speed Communication Networks). See my activities and publications there.
