The primary restrictions on candidature are: (1) to ensure the international character of the ITN project, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity in Ireland for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately prior to the date of selection; (2) candidates must not yet have been awarded the doctorate degree and must be in the first 4 years (full-time equivalent) of their research career; (3) ave a first class or higher second class degree (or equivalent) in a numerate discipline such as mathematics / statistics / computer science / engineering.

Formal details can be found in the official advertisment.

To apply for this post, a detailed CV, including a list of educational experience, motivation letter, research interests and expertise; the names, email addresses, correspondence addresses and contact numbers of two referees whom the University may contact should be sent to: Dr Ken Duffy (ken.duffy@nuim.ie).The deadline for application is the 31st of July 2013.

MSc scholarship: Coding in Bacteria Communication Nanonetworks

Monday, March 4th, 2013

Applications are invited for a Masters degree studentship at Hamilton Institute, National University of Ireland in the area of Molecular Communications. The successful candidate should have strong background in information theory, mathematical foundations, as well as communication network protocols (background in molecular biology is not required).

This is a full-time research position for 1.5 years to develop theoretical models for source coding in multi-hop bacteria communication nanonetworks. In particular the focus of the project will investigate how current source coding models can be applied to bacteria nanonetworks.

The Hamilton Institute has one of the largest applied mathematics research groups in Ireland and is an international centre of excellence. The successful candidate will also be collaborating closely with the Nano Communication Centre (NCC), Tampere University of Technology, Finland (http://et4nbic.cs.tut.fi/nanocom/index.html), and will be spending a period of time at NCC.

This postgraduate scholarship is open to Irish, EU and international students and carries a stipend of €18,000 (tax free).

To apply for this post, candidates should submit a detailed CV, motivation letter, a summary of scientific interests and expertise, as well as the names and addresses of two referees to: Prof. Doug Leith (Doug.Leith@nuim.ie).

Functional Programming and Automatic Differentiation: PhD Studentships, Postdoctoral Positions

Monday, June 11th, 2012

Seeking PhD students and postdocs interested in an elegant combination of functional programming and big-iron style numeric computing.

Functional Programming and Automatic Differentiation

PhD Studentships
Postdoctoral Positions

We are adding exact first-class derivative calculation operators (Automatic Differentiation or AD) to the lambda calculus, and embodying the combination in a production-quality optimising compiler. Our research prototype compiler generates object code competitive with the fastest current systems, which are based on FORTRAN. We are seeking PhD students and postdocs with interest and experience in relevant areas, such as programming language theory, numeric computing, machine learning, numeric linear algebra, differential geometry; and a burning drive to help lift big iron numeric computing out of the 1960s and into a newer higher order. Specific sub-projects include: compiler and numeric programming environment construction; writing, simplifying, and generalising numeric and machine learning algorithms through the use of type theory and AD operators; and associated type/lambda calculus/PLT/real computation issues.
